 Subject: Veneration of Mary

PT|Father Mateo,

PT|I recently read your response to Scott Spencer's 8/29/92 message
  |concerning the veneration of Mary. In your response, you quoted
  |Luke 1:26, and Luke 1:42,45 as the answer. Reviewing these verses
  |helped me understand the basis of the Catholic Liturgy associated
  |with Mary, but did little to clear up my misconception of Mary's
  |role in the Catholic Faith.

PT|Each time I have attended a Catholic Mass, I have left with the
  |impression that Mary is held on a plateau above Jesus (based soley
  |on the number of times her name is invoked). Could you help explain
  |what role Mary plays relative to the Trinity? Or point me in the
  |right direction.

PT|I appreciate your response.

PT|Grace and Peace,

Dear Phil,

For a very satisfying treatment of Mary's role in God's plan for
salvation, you can download Pope John Paul II's encyclical "Mother of
the Redeemer" from WESTERN DOMINICAN (or any other Catholic
Information Network node). WD's number is (510) 528-3928 - PCP CAOAK.
(Church Documents and Other Files). The reference on the WD net is

If you want the encyclical in the form of a published booklet, you
may order:
John paul II. "Mother of the Redeemer" EP 0765
The price is $1.50 plus $2.50 postage handling.

Order from: St. Paul Book and Media Center
            1570 - 5th Avenue
            San Diego, Ca. 92101
            Tel: (619) 232-1442.

Please attend Mass more often and listen carefully. Last Sunday,
November 8, was our 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. This morning I went
through the Mass rite for last Sunday and counted the times both Jesus
and Mary were mentioned or invoked. Jesus by name or title (Lord,
Lamb of God, Son of God, etc.) was mentioned or invoked fifty-one
times; Mary four times. You yourself have appealed to "The number of
times (Mary's) name is invoked." Does a score of 51 to 4 in Jesus'
favor seem to put His Mother on "a plateau above Jesus"?

The traditional formula expressing Mary's role with respect to the
Persons of The Trinity is this: she is Daughter of the Father, Mother
of the Son and Spouse of the Holy Spirit.

                                        Sincerely in Christ,

                                                Father Mateo
