 Subject: Faith Healing

BR|Father,

BR|I was wondering if you knew what the Church says about faith healing.
  |My parents & other relatives, who are from the Philippines, believe
  |strongly in this and that it is a gift from God to certain individuals.

BR|Thanks.

Dear Ben,

In our religion, faith healing means the power of Christian faith to
obtain an answer to prayer for health.

Our Lord often miraculously healed people, as did the Apostles and
other early Christians (Mt. 10:1; Acts 3:1-16; 8:7; 9:32-42; 1 Cor.
12:9, 28, 30).

For the beatification of a non-martyr, one scientifically attested
miracle is required. Usually such miracles are miracles of healing.

Perhaps certain individuals possess a healing gift from God. If the
use of such a gift results in thanks to God in union with the Church,
it is certainly holy and beneficial. However, the spirit of evil and
superstition easily enters in. Also, the body-mind composite is not
perfectly understood. We can "con" ourselves into healing ourselves.
If this happens, it is not supernatural faith but natural forces
that produce the cure.

                                        Sincerely in Christ,

                                                Father Mateo
