How thick are CV accretion discs?

Tim Naylor (Keele)

The standard model of low-mass X-ray binaries invokes extensive vertical structure in their accretion discs to explain features seem in the lightcurves of eclipsing and near-eclipsing system. These structures imply opening angles of around 10 degrees. In contrast, the case for such thickening is controversial for cataclysmic variables. I outline the case for extensive vertical structure in CV discs, and discuss the implications for disc mapping.
