Infra-red imaging of barred spiral galaxies with the Carlos Sanchez Telescope, Teide Observatory

Simon Kemp (IAC)

An infrared JK photometric imaging survey of a sample of barred spiral galaxies undertaken as part of and as follow-up to a major multiwavelength photometric and spectroscopic survey of these galaxies (the BARS International Time Project) is discussed. The usefulness of these observations in the context of correcting for the presence of dust and elucidating the type of stellar populations present in small defined regions of a galaxy is explained. Recent improvements to the Infra-Red Camera (CAIN II) utilised at the 1.5-m Carlos Sanchez Telescope, Teide Observatory are noted and the observations discussed. Some prelimary results are displayed for a few important galaxies, including colour maps. In particular a number of small bars present interior and often perpendicular to the main bar features of galaxies (the `bars-within-bars' phenomenon) are displayed.
