The distribution of cool gas in the local interstellar medium

Bob Warwick (Leicester)

We use ROSAT EUV and soft X-ray absorption data for nearby late-type and white dwarf stars, combined with distance measurements from Hipparcos, to chart the distribution of cool gas (largely HI + HeI + HeII) within 500 pc of the Sun. The ~2000 stars in our sample give improved definition of the shape of the local cavity. Comparison with recent 1/4 keV soft X-ray background measurements also constrains the volume emissivity of the local very hot component of the ISM.
