PDS456: an extreme accretion-rate quasar?

Paul O'Brien (Leicester)

We present multi-wavelength (radio - X-ray) observations of the most luminous object in the local (z<0.3) Universe: the nearby, radio-quiet quasar PDS456. In the optical and near-IR, PDS456 is a brighter `twin' of 3C273. In the X-ray band, however, PDS456 displays a remarkable spectrum. In particular, it has a very deep, ionized K edge coupled with fast X-ray continuum variability (doubling in 15 ksecs). These properties are consistent with the idea that PDS456 is a quasar running at an unusually high accretion rate.
