The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: the local luminosity density and Omega(M)

Nick Cross (St. Andrews)

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey team has now measured the redshifts of ca. 50000 galaxies. I have used the redshift data and the APM input catalogue to construct a Bivariate Brightness Distribution (BBD), which is an extension to the Luminosity Function (LF), by binning galaxies in intrinsic surface brightness as well as absolute magnitude.

The 1/Vmax correction varies in both intrinsic surface brightness and absolute magnitude. I will describe the selection effects present, and how to deal with them.

The BBD is the first step to calculating the luminosity density and the mass-density parameter Omega(M). The talk will outline the problems in calculating these values, and the progress that I have made.
