The asteroseismology of accreting white dwarfs
Liza Van Zyl (Oxford)
The WZ Sge star GW Librae is the first CV discovered to have a primary
in the DAV instability strip, making it the only nonradially pulsating
star known to be accreting. An accreting pulsator could have a
non-spherical, latitude-dependant chemical composition, density,
temperature and angular rotation structure in its outer layers, making the
standard (spherically symmetric) solution to white dwarf pulsations
invalid for its study. A discussion of the difficulties of performing
asteroseismology on accreting objects is presented.
