The HST Medium-Deep Survey Key Project: latest results on gravitational lensing

Richard Griffiths (Carnegie Mellon)

The HST surveys have led to the discovery of numerous `strong' gravitational lenses which are potentially useful as cosmological probes. The properties of these lenses will be described.

The Medium-Deep Survey, combined with the other surveys using WFPC2, has also been used to measure weak gravitational lensing around field galaxies. The effect is strongest for elliptical galaxies, but is also apparent around spirals. The measured effect is used to place constraints on the average overall masses and dark-halo cut-off radii of the field galaxies.
