TRACE observations of prominences

Edward DeLuca (CfA)

The EUV passbands of TRACE clearly show cool chromospheric material in absorption in addition to the dramatic hot loops. In active regions bright (emitting) regions and dark (absorbing) regions appear to be co-spatial and have similar flow speeds. Cross streaming flows are seen in prominences. Estimates of the column density of the absorbing material can help constrain the energetics of siphon flows, and the structure and dynamics of prominences.

We will present our analysis of absorption features in an active region arched filament system and a prominence. Bounds on the column densities will be given and the limitations and future applications of this technique will be discussed.
