CDS-GIS data analysis

E.R. Breeveld, MSSL

The Grazing Incidence Spectrometer (GIS) system on the SOHO/CDS instrument produces spectra of user selected solar features in the 15-80nm range. The many components of the GIS system are well understood, and documented in the CDS-GIS Instrument Report. The report describes how to observe with the GIS, and how to analyse the returned data. The report is divided into two parts, the GIS Instrument Guide (by R D Bentley) and the GIS Software User Manual (by E R Breeveld).

This poster highlights some items from the report. The Instrument Guide introduces the detector system, along with a description of the raw and on-board processed data; then the calibration corrections are described. The Software User Manual continues with descriptions of the software available to read, process, and calibrate the data. The final section shows how to use the calibrated data, for example to produce temperatures and densities using the CHIANTI package.

Printed copies of the report are available from me, or from the Web as CDS notes 54 and 55 (http://orpheus.nascom.nasa.gov/cds/software_notes.html).
