Comet Hale-Bopp and the DIBs

The early discovery of Comet Hale-Bopp allowed selection of an
early-type star which could be observed in appulse. The presence of
the cometary coma did not show any enhancement of the diffuse
interstellar lines, suggesting that those lines may be entirely an
interstellar phenomenon.
