Dear Brad,

The methods approved for intinction are clearly set forth in GIRM
246 (a-d), q.v. I conclude that for the communicant to pick up a
host and dip it in the chalice is clearly not envisioned in the
General Instruction. I believe such a practice is an abuse which
could easily lead to accidents and even sacrilege.

We are faced with a widespread lack of reverence in our worship,
a loss of our sense of the sacred. Recent polls even suggest
strongly that there is a massive loss of faith among a majority
of Catholics in the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Blessed
Sacrament. In view of this, we should certainly deplore any
casual treatment of the sacred species of the Holy Eucharist.
What you graphically term "self-intinction" is simply treating
Holy Communion as "finger food". Colonel Sanders invades the
sanctuary.

In Pope John Paul's Letter to all Bishops DOMINICAE CENAE*,
February 24, 1980, no. 11, we read: "To touch the sacred species
and TO DISTRIBUTE THEM WITH THEIR OWN HANDS is a privilege of the
ordained, one which inndicates an active participation IN THE
MINISTRY OF THE EUCHARIST" (emphases are the Pope's). The Pope
opens this ministry to lay people only "to meet a just need, but
always after an adequate preparation."

I dare to hope you will honor your pastor's good will and
Christian humility by speaking to him of your concern. Please
purchase a copy of DOMINICAE CENAE*.

Sincerely in Christ,
Father Mateo
