Dear Jackie,

It is necessary to distinguish clearly between disordered
inclination (homosexual orientation) and sinful will and behavior
(acting out homosexually). The former is not sinful; the latter is
sinful. Mere orientation is not sin. For example, if one is
inclined to steal (kleptomania) and yet does not steal, he does
not sin. By prayer and God's grace he overcomes his weakness,
grows in virtue, and follows Christ more closely than before.

Homosexual acts (not mere orientation) are gravely sinful. Any use
of sexuality outside of heterosexual, monogamous marriage is
contrary to God's will, biblical teaching, and sacred tradition.
But homosexual orientation resisted is an act of self-denial
pleasing to God, which opens the faithful disciple to saving
grace.
